We had an absolutely spectacular time at Stanmore and Canons Park Synagogue’s Purim celebrations, as the community came together for an evening packed with colour, laughter, ruach, and more than a little noise!
The festivities began with the costume parade prior to the Megillah reading. From inflatable cows, to circus ringleaders, mischievous minions to a striking Sia (complete with wig!), the creativity on display was simply fantastic. We even had a prisoner making a break for it and ‘Sister Act’, bringing a touch of Hollywood sparkle to the evening.
In the main shul the Megillah was beautifully read by Asher Dworkin. As ever the Stanmore community enthusiastically participated in the mitzvah of blotting out Haman’s name. Every mention was met with whistles, stamping feet and enthusiastic boos that more than succeeded in drowning him out.
Following the reading the celebration continued with the lively and brilliantly run community bingo. The prizes ranged all the way from a slightly used top hat to a helicopter ride and a supercar experience, and even a pair of Fiddler on the Roof slippers! Particularly memorable was the second instalment of Jewish Dad Jokes read aloud by Rabbi Eli.
For the little ones, there was a mini disco which proved to be a huge hit.
Popcorn and candyfloss kept everyone going early on, followed by a schawarma dinner rounded off with hamantaschen.
A massive well done must go to our incredible youth directors, Ari and Chani, whose hard work, creativity, and attention to detail ensured that the evening ran seamlessly from start to finish. Their energy and dedication were evident in every aspect of the programme, creating an event that catered beautifully to all ages.
We are already looking forward to next year’s celebrations!
