When describing the essential values paramount to Judaism as a faith and as a functioning structure, Jewish teachings highlight three qualities: 1) Torah (of course!). 2) Prayer (naturally!) 3) Acts of kindness.
That latter category may come in at number three. Remarkably, however, the other two – critical as they undoubtedly are – are set aside temporarily when vital kindness is required. This can be charity, assistance to others (including the less obvious – like helping an individual who is struggling with a load), visiting those who are unwell, comforting the bereaved and lending a supporting shoulder to lean on.
A community is assessed on all three of these categories. Arguably, it is its attention to kindness which most accurately defines its direction, focus and position.
At Stanmore, we offer a wide range of pastoral services—all under the umbrella of care and kindness. Whether struggling financially, experiencing health issues, experiencing stress and anxiety, or experiencing bereavement, the community is well-placed to help and assist. This is done professionally, with sensitivity, discretion, and complete confidentiality.
Our Rabbinic team is an obvious address to turn to. They will always make the time to meet with people, will visit those who request it – especially when there is an illness, and are there to offer advice and counsel.
We are also blessed with SSCC – Stanmore Synagogue Community Care. This comprises a fantastic team of volunteers who are highly trained in the delicate area of support and counselling. They are the first and original Synagogue support group in this country and inspired many other communities to emulate.
