Chaverot
The Women’s Committees at Stanmore and Canons Park Synagogue are known as Chaverot—‘friends’. They aim to create a welcoming space for women of the community to come together for a variety of unique social and educational events.
Past events have included an Israeli dance evening, a talk by Dr Rachel Century about the role female administrators of the Third Reich played in the Holocaust, a lag baaomer bbq, Simchat Torah talks by Jacqui Rudolph on various topics, a Shavout-inspired session called ‘Wicked Women’ and plenty other interesting and diverse events. These include a talk by Maralyn Turgel about her father during the war and a session on how to be more organised. A Shavuot cookery session plus hearing from the inspirational Philippa Gabbay following her conversion to Judaism.
Having the Chaverot group at the synagogue means women of all ages from the community can get together in person in a relaxed atmosphere.
The committee is open to hosting a wide variety of events and welcomes any potential ideas the community would enjoy. Chaverot aims for everyone to benefit from being together in person, sharing ideas while socialising, and strengthening the community spirit.
