SUMMARY:National Gallery Tour: Where Torah Meets Art*
DESCRIPTION:Can art serve as a Jewish way of looking at the Bible? Or is a word worth a thousand pictures? \nAs we walk through the splendid National Gallery\, we’ll study pictures of biblical stories to discover how they compare to\, and contrast with\, the Hebrew text. Along the way we’ll marvel at Belshazzar’s headwear\, admire Elijah’s fervour\, and question Rubens’ ideas of Israelite dress customs in the desert. We’ll uncover some of the troubling messages hidden beneath the surface of Western depictions of the Bible. \nJoin the unique opporutunity to see some of the world’s most famous works of art through a completely different and amazingly Jewish perspective\, with: “Where Torah Meets Art” tour\, led by LSJS educator Lindsey Taylor-Guthartz. \nWe will confirm where to meet at the National Gallery closer to the time.  The tour will start promptly at 11:00am and will run for approximately 2 ½ hours. \n  \n[N.B: As part of your registration\, we will be sharing your name and email address with LSJS so that they can share information about other tours that they run. If you do not want your details shared\, please email office@stanmoresynagogue.org to let them know.]\n

SUMMARY:Footsteps & Foundations: A Tour of the East End
DESCRIPTION:Walking Tour of the East End with Andrew Davis  \n[Spaces are limited to just 20 participants — reserve your spot early to avoid missing out!] \n Sunday 20th July | 10:00 am meet at Stanmore Station (tour begins at 11am sharp) \n1:00pm (approx) end at Liverpool Street Station \nJoin us for a fascinating walking tour through the East End with expert guide Andrew Davis\, as we explore the rich and layered story of immigration in this historic part of London. \nThis tour goes beyond a purely Jewish narrative\, weaving together the experiences of various communities that have made the East End their home over the centuries – from the 17th-century Protestant Huguenots fleeing France\, to the Jewish immigrants of the 19th century\, to the Bangladeshi Muslims who settled more recently. \nWe’ll visit a range of significant religious and cultural sites\, including synagogues like the iconic Bevis Marks\, former Jewish institutions such as the Jewish Soup Kitchen for the poor\, as well as stopping near to churches and mosques that reflect the area’s wider tapestry of migration and faith. \nWhether you’re interested in London’s Jewish history\, interfaith heritage\, or the broader patterns of migration that have shaped the city\, this walking tour promises insight\, stories\, and surprises around every corner. \nBooking essential. Comfortable shoes recommended. \nPlease note: we will be walking (with stops) for around 2 hours. The route includes a mix of pavements\, narrow streets\, and some uneven surfaces. Attendees should ensure they are comfortable walking at a steady pace for the duration of the tour.

Join us on a guided visit to the Cairo Geniza at Cambridge University Library\, where Dr. Melonie Schmierer-Lee\, Research Associate\, will reveal some of the most prized and preserved documents\, books\, letters\, and everyday writings—offering a vivid window into life along the Mediterranean over 1\,000 years ago. \n– Bank Holiday Monday\, 5 May 2025– Meeting at 10:30 AM – Cambridge University Library (please arrange your own transport to and from Cambridge)– Tour: 11:00 AM sharp – 1:00 PM \nFollowing the tour\, we will enjoy lunch together outdoors (weather permitting)—please bring your own kosher packed lunch.
