SUMMARY:Simchat Torah Project
DESCRIPTION:A year on.  \nSo much pain\, anguish and worry. We have witnessed communities destroyed\, families torn apart and a conflict that redrew the lines forever. A day that is meant to be one of happiness and celebration\, Simchat Torah 5784\, was overshadowed by our nation’s greatest tragedy in living memory. \nBut in and among the darkness\, sparks of light still shone through. Thousands of volunteers have poured into Israel to help in whichever way they can\, funds have been raised\, vital equpiment donated. We have also seen an upsurge in prayer\, study and committment to acts of chessed (kindness).  \nOct 7th and its aftermath reminded us of the strength\, resilience and enduring hope of the Jewish people. Simchat Torah\, the celebration of the Torah’s completion\, reminds us of the fabric that binds us together\, the gift that makes us unique.  \nThis year\, as part of our range of events commemorating Oct 7th\, we are proud to launch The Simchat Torah Project: \n1) We invite participating families to sign up before the deadline of Monday the 23rd of September. \n2) Each participating family will receive a Simchat Torah Project Resource Pack \n3) This pack contains: A picture of a hostage either still in Gaza or killed on/since Oct 7th\, their Hebrew name\, and a section of the Torah (with English translation and commentary) to study together as a family/individuals. \n4) Participating families will also receive a single artistic panel featuring their section of the Torah\, which is one piece in a much larger mosaic which will be displayed in the Shul to commemorate this beautiful initiative and amazing achievement.  \n5) As the purpose of the Project is to complete the Torah in the merit and memory of the hostages in line with the anniversary of their capture\, we ask that all participating families/individuals finish studying their sections by Thursday the 24th of October\, which is the Hebrew anniversary of Oct 7th. \n6) The following day\, Simchat Torah itself\, we will come together as a community to celebrate our completion of the Torah with pride and joy. We will also ‘unveil’ the mosaic built through the efforts of participating families and individuals.  \n  \nStudy at your own pace\, in your own time\, in the comfort of your own home.  \n   \nTogether\, we will celebrate and strengthen our indentities as proud Jews in modern society. \nTogether\, we will celebrate the wisdom and heritage that makes us unique. \nTogether\, we will dance again.

SUMMARY:Page Turning and Clock Watching: Rosh Hashana Unlocked
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to our special-edition Wednesday Wisdom\, unlocking the mysteries and frustrations of the Rosh Hashana service.  \nWith a selection of talks exploring the themes of the day and content geared toward helping us understand and connect to the Rosh Hashana experience.  \nRosh Hashana. A beautiful time in our calendar\, filled with joy and hope for a sweet new year. \nBut also a time of confusion. Fed up of page turning and clock watching\, of sitting in Shul not sure what to say\, think or feel? Let’s unlock the mystery together. \nSchedule: \n19:15 – Mincha followed by Maariv \n19:45 – Welcome and introduction\, by Rabbi Eli \n20:00 – ‘The View from the Gallery – How to connect from behind the Mechitza (and in front of it!)’ ~ Shoshana Landau \n20:45 – Refreshments  \n21:00 – ‘Page Turning and Clock Watching: Reconstructing our New Year’ ~ Samuel Landau \n21:45 – End \n  \nWe are delighted to welcome guest speakers Rabbi Dr. Samuel and Ma’ayan Shoshana Landau\, who will host our keynote talks.  \nFormerly the Rabbi of Kingston and then Barnet Synagogues\, Samuel is a clinical psychologist in the NHS and private practice. Samuel is also an honorary lecturer at UCL\, and draws upon his knowledge and expertise to inspire culture shifts in large institutions such as the British Army.  \nSamuel’s keynote is a tour-de-force of a journey through the three key sections of the special Mussaf service on Rosh Hashana\, tracing its evolution from ancient times through to the modern era\, and providing us with the tools and mindset to connect to it in a profoundly eye-opening way.  \nShoshana\, originally from Australia and a teacher for the New South Wales Board of Jewish Education\, worked in property investment and was also one of the first graduates of the Chief Rabbi’s Ma’ayan programme for women educators.  \nShoshana’s keynote will focus on how to transform what is otherwise a very passive experience for the average congregant (especially for women) into a proactive and deeply spiritual one. \n

SUMMARY:Women's Tefillah Group
DESCRIPTION:Over 30 years ago\, in February 1993\, the women of Stanmore held the very first Orthodox Women’s Tefillah service in the UK.   While early services were held off the shul premises\, the Women’s Tefillah Group moved into the shul in 2012.  \nA service is held once every three months in the Beit Midrash\, which has opened up many opportunities for women to lead services\, lein from a Chumash\, and read the haftorah. We also read specially adapted prayers for loved ones on a yahrzeit or for those who are unwell. We also take great joy in celebrating and blessing new babies and forthcoming brides. At each service\, one or two women give a d’var torah\, and we regularly have girls leading Anim Zemirot.  \nAll women and girls are welcome\, regardless of their knowledge or level of observance. There are opportunities for women and girls to learn to lein or take services.  Contact Jacqui Rudolph or Ruth de Kare Silver for more details  jacqui@stanmoresynagogue.org

SUMMARY:Behind the Headlines: A Journalist on the Media Frontline
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our final guest speaker of the academic year\, as Nathan Jeffay draws on his extensive first-hand experience to guide us through some hard-hitting questions: \nWhat was the response across world media in the aftermath of Oct 7th? Was it enough? When did the prevailing narrative start to turn\, and why? Is it possible to differentiate honest reporting from bias when emotions run so high? What can we do to turn the media tide? \nSchedule: \n19:30 – Mincha followed by Maariv (Beit Mordechai) \n20:00 – Keynote speech by Nathan Jeffay (Freeman-Susman Hall) \n20:45 – Q&A\, hosted by Rabbi Eli  \n21:15 – Refreshments \nNathan has worked as a journalist for 20 years\, covering Israel since 2007. During his time in Israel he has been correspondent for The Forward\, The Australian Jewish News\, The Jewish Chronicle\, the Jewish Week of New York and Times of Israel. During the current war he has worked closely with national media from the UK. Nathan was on the ground facilitating and advising\, organizing interviews and coverage for the Sun and the Mirror in the days immediately after Oct 7th. \nHe holds degrees from the University of Cambridge and the University of Leeds and now lives in Zichron Yaakov with his wife and four children. \nPlease note: As this event is open to the wider community\, for security reasons booking in advance is required.
