SUMMARY:The Cairo Geniza at Cambridge
DESCRIPTION:< SPACES ARE LIMITED\, BOOK NOW TO AVOID DISAPPOINTMENT > \nExperience something new this May Bank Holiday\, enjoy some time in Cambridge with Stanmore Shul & Belmont Shul and uncover a treasure trove of Jewish history. \nFor a thousand years\, the Jewish community of Fustat (Old Cairo) placed their worn-out books and writings in a storeroom—the Genizah—of the Ben Ezra Synagogue. Hidden for centuries\, this extraordinary collection offers a rare glimpse into medieval Jewish life. In 1897\, Dr. Solomon Schechter traveled to Cairo\, recognising the immense historical value of the Genizah\, and brought 193\,000 manuscripts back to Cambridge. \nNow\, you have the chance to see these remarkable fragments of history up close. Join us on a guided visit to the Cairo Geniza at Cambridge University Library\, where Dr. Melonie Schmierer-Lee\, Research Associate\, will reveal some of the most prized and preserved documents\, books\, letters\, and everyday writings—offering a vivid window into life along the Mediterranean over 1\,000 years ago. \n– Bank Holiday Monday\, 5 May 2025– Meeting at 10:30 AM – Cambridge University Library (please arrange your own transport to and from Cambridge)– Tour: 11:00 AM sharp – 1:00 PM \nFollowing the tour\, we will enjoy lunch together outdoors (weather permitting)—please bring your own kosher packed lunch. Afterward\, you may choose to continue exploring Cambridge with the group or take the afternoon at your own pace. \nThis is a rare opportunity to engage with Jewish history in an unparalleled way—don’t miss it!

SUMMARY:Yom HaShoah: The Story of Rela Rogoff
DESCRIPTION:A Yom Hashoah talk by Sam Rogoff & Generation2Generation \nThursday 24th April | Doors open at 8:00pm \nRela Rogoff was born June 1922\, the youngest of seven children\, into an Orthodox family in Stanislavov\, Poland. One of her two brothers and two of her sisters survived the Holocaust. She died in London in 2006.   \nRela’s parents were wholesale fruiterers; life before the war revolved around both close and extended family when her hometown was first invaded by the Russians in 1939\, then by the Germans in June 1941.    \nAfter her parents and some siblings were murdered in the early pogroms\, she escaped to Lublin where\, living as a Polish Catholic\, she was soon betrayed\, imprisoned and tortured for three months in a Gestapo prison before being transported to Auschwitz where she survived 19 months.  \nShe met her future husband\, a serving member of the British armed forces when she was on the run towards the end of the war\, who brought her to England to start a new life.  \nRela had amazing strength and determination as well as an incredible will to survive. Sam’s presentation is interspersed with his mother’s and aunt’s testimonies read by family members\, including extracts from her book ‘The Will to Survive’ which was written by Rela together with her husband in 2005. \nWe are grateful and indebted to Sam\, a beloved member of our community and our Honorary Executive\, for giving his time to share his dear mother’s incredible story. \nSchedule: \n7:30pm – Mincha/Maariv \n8:00pm – Doors open \n8:15pm – Keynote Presentation: The Story of Rela Rogoff \n9:00pm – Questions \n9:15pm – Memorial prayers led by Rabbi Eli

SUMMARY:LSJS Exodus Tour of the British Museum
DESCRIPTION:This event is now sold out! Please join our waiting list below. \n  \nWhy is this night different from all other nights? \nExperience a pre-Pesach immersive educational experience like no other with LSJS as you tour the British museum through the lens of history\, archaeology and tradition. \nWho was the Pharaoh of the Haggadah? Did the plagues really happen? Is there any evidence that the Exodus happened? What was the geopolitical situation at the time? What did it really mean to be ‘slaves to Pharaoh in Egypt’?  \nBeyond all of the above\, our understanding of the Torah’s description of the Exodus story must be complemented with an understanding of Ancient Egyptian customs\, concepts and beliefs. Through the statues\, tombs and hieroglyphs\, as well as the biblical text\, this tour will transform your Seder night experience. \nRun by Michelle Sint\, educator for LSJS. Michelle studied English\, American and Hebrew Literature (BA) and Jewish Studies (MA). Michelle is a graduate of the LSJS Susi Bradfield Women Educators’ Fellowships\, she teaches and guides tours\, and teaches the Matan Bat Mitzvah course. \n  \nWith thanks to Belmont United Synagogue for partnering with us for this event. \nFor security reasons\, our meeting point will be confirmed nearer the time via email.
